The Perfect Gift of Team Friction

by Leigh / Thursday, 07 May 2026 / Published in Business

In our most recent Growth HotSeat session, we explored the fascinating tension between optimising our professional time and maintaining our inner peace. As leaders, we frequently rely on external systems, rigid data, and hard boundaries to streamline our days. However, we discovered that true clarity requires much more than a well-managed calendar; it demands a reinterpretation of how we view our daily friction.

The session opened with an honest discussion about our modern tendency to outsource our thinking. With the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, it is incredibly easy to assume that external platforms hold the undeniable facts. We discussed a recent scenario where one leader received completely conflicting legal advice from two different AI programmes regarding a cancelled vehicle registration. One system confidently stated he had zero options, while the other provided a clear pathway for review. This perfectly illustrated a core leadership truth: external data is frequently flawed. If we blindly trust the information handed to us without verifying it through our own intuition, we risk making decisions based on false information.

The theme of perceived reality carried over into our main discussion with a Member who runs a highly successful building products enterprise. Recently, he made a conscious decision to cap his working hours, leaving the office early each afternoon to prioritise his physical health and longevity. While this boundary is incredibly positive, he noticed an unintended side effect. By attempting to compress his workload into fewer hours, his patience had been getting thinner. He found himself agitated when observing staff members who lacked priority focus, questioning why they chose to fluff around on trivial tasks rather than executing the logical next steps.

We unpacked the reality that time scarcity is the ultimate illusion. Mainstream quantum science suggests that our perceived reality is highly subjective, and time itself is not strictly linear. When we operate under the belief that we lack time, we instinctively project that limitation onto our environment. We essentially drag stories of lack from our past into our present moments, assuming that an inefficient employee is actively threatening our success.

When confronted with this team friction, we essentially have two choices, which can seem like three. First, we can resist it and make the other person wrong, which only breeds more conflict. Second, we can avoid it entirely, stepping around the issue to temporarily bypass the discomfort (another form of resistance). Third, we can choose to receive it. By recognising that our frustration is merely a reflection of our own internal stories of limitation, we can welcome the irritation as a perfect gift. It shows us exactly where our mindset is restricted, allowing us to actively reinterpret the situation through a lens of abundance rather than lack.

To implement this practically, the Member committed to capturing his daily irritations on a simple phone note or list. Instead of trying to force a mindset shift in the heat of a chaotic moment, he will write the frustration down to be let go of retroactively. Because time is not fixed, letting go of a past grievance in the present moment fundamentally alters our current state, clearing the active mental bandwidth necessary to hear our intuition.

A legal practice owner in the group perfectly illustrated the tangible benefits of removing these internal blocks. For years, he struggled with the frustration of acting as the central bottleneck for trivial daily issues, managing everything that came through his firm. Recognising the toll this took on his strategic focus, he elevated a trusted personal assistant into a general manager position. By actively restructuring his delegations, he removed himself from the daily weeds. This shift not only empowered his new manager, who thrives on handling those exact tasks, but also allowed him to completely disconnect. He recently experienced the pure joy of diving for sea urchins in New Zealand, entirely removed from the operational noise of his practice.

Another Member, who runs a large construction firm, echoed this exact sentiment of structural evolution. He is currently navigating the complex process of adopting cutting-edge technology and resetting his team culture. He noted the frustration of visualising a clear, logical end goal, only to watch staff members take chaotic routes to get there. However, by holding a firm standard and refusing to micromanage every behaviour, he is allowing those who do not align with the new culture to naturally filter themselves out. He is building a robust platform for the future without carrying the emotional weight of less matched employees.

The overarching theme of the discussion highlighted our innate resistance to peace. Several Members, including one securing an exclusive state-wide distribution deal and another building an estimating software application, noted that the days their businesses run perfectly smoothly are frequently the days they feel the most uncomfortable. We are heavily conditioned to operate in a state of chaotic problem-solving. When things are quiet, our minds frantically search for shiny new projects or fresh problems to solve just to return to a familiar baseline of busy friction.

We learned that as we elevate our awareness and our operations become more refined, the edge of our comfort zone constantly moves. The unfamiliar territory of genuine ease requires tremendous courage to inhabit. If we want to navigate this transition smoothly, we must relentlessly capture our stories of lack and actively hand them over to our higher knowing for reinterpretation. By continually letting go of our perceived limitations, we strip away the unnecessary complexity of running a company. In this pristine mental space, our intuition effortlessly provides the exact answers required to grow our businesses with grace.
