The Illusion of the Gap

by Leigh / Thursday, 11 June 2026 / Published in Business

In our latest Growth HotSeat session, we explored how to make our experience feel consistently good, actively removing the peaks and troughs of daily leadership. We frequently accept the idea that high-stress moments and euphoric wins are simply the normal, unavoidable part of doing business. Our discussion revealed that heavily relying on these external events to dictate our internal state only ensures we remain on a chaotic operational treadmill.

The conversation opened by examining the neuroscience behind our business reality. Science demonstrates that we process a microscopically narrow slice of the world around us. In fact, the brain uses up to ninety-five percent of its bandwidth to project a simulated reality based on our past experiences, rather than accurately reading incoming data. This means the stressful gaps we perceive between ourselves, our team members, and our goals are actually illusions.

One Member, navigating complex project developments and lender relationships, illustrated the power of stepping off this cycle. In the face of significant industry challenges, he chose not to force a resolution. Instead, he leaned into his daily meditation practice and chose to sit comfortably in the uncertainty. This grounded approach was so effective that his commercial lenders actively commented on his remarkable calmness amidst the seeming chaos. By not getting in his own way, he found that solutions naturally presented themselves, highlighting the tangible ROI of a regulated nervous system.

This theme of allowing rather than forcing was echoed by another Member who recently returned from a holiday in Fiji. He is currently navigating negotiations for his family home, yet he reported a complete absence of worry. Having consistently practiced letting go of his internal resistance, he noted that opportunities simply line up on their own without his forced intervention. He observed that maintaining a consistent, relaxed state of mind removes the burden of constant analysis, making daily life significantly easier.

However, unlearning our established beliefs and conditioning is not always a smooth process. A Member currently managing a highly detailed, multi-year property renovation shared his ongoing friction with these new concepts. While navigating the financial surprises of installing custom stone bench tops, he admitted that he sometimes finds the language surrounding deep intuition quite frustrating to digest. The group unpacked this common resistance, noting that our old programming will frequently trigger a sense of overwhelm or mental fuzziness to block out new, liberating information. Acknowledging this discomfort is a completely normal and necessary part of the unlearning journey.

The discussion then shifted to the mechanics of making decisions. A Member expanding his franchise network across new states raised a highly relatable question: how do we filter the difference between our quiet intuition and our loud, speculating ego? He wondered how to discern the correct next step when faced with multiple operational choices and competing timelines.

We discovered that the very act of making a decision implies that we are in two minds. When we are fully connected to our intuition, there is no debate; there is simply a quiet certainty about what to do next. To reach that state, we must actively quiet down the noise of our rationalising mind. By letting go of our rigid plans, we create the space for our inner guidance to present a clear path.

We learned that navigating the complex reality of running our businesses supports us in embracing a simple principle: a little willingness. We do not need to figure out every step of the journey, nor do we need to aggressively orchestrate every outcome. We simply need to be willing to listen to the aspect of ourselves that holds a broader, connected perspective. By consistently asking our intuition what we need to know in any given moment, we remove the friction from our leadership and allow our enterprises to grow with increasing and sometimes surprising ease.

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” – Albert Einstein
