Intrinsic stability

by Leigh / Thursday, 11 May 2023 / Published in Personal

How do you feel when your monthly turnover is down?

Would you say you’re happier when you’re in a record month?

These questions would seem to have obvious answers, however, today’s Thursday HotSeat was centred around being able to create a stable base internally, allowing us to operate outside of being reactive to external circumstances. Meaning that we could and would enjoy both of the above experiences equally.

The key to this is building enough intrinsic stability to be able to maintain levels of happiness, focus and clear thinking, even if external circumstances are seemingly less than ideal.

And why is this important?

To demonstrate further, let’s say you would be fine with turnover being down for a month, you’ve had that before and it wasn’t the end of the world.

But what if it was two months.. or three?

And what if we add in a few challenges with the kids that mean you’re getting repeatedly interrupted sleep as well.

Still on top form and loving life?

Possibly not entirely.

And whom do you really want at the helm when circumstances need a little extra navigating?

The brilliant, happy, can-do, genius version of you that was rocking it when you were having that record month of course.

Hmmm.. I’m sure you can see the relevance.

If we’re relying largely on extrinsic conditions for stability, we are essentially not in charge of our experience and how we show up, instead being dictated to by ‘life’. This is where life can end up doing us, instead of the other way around.

Consistent focus and action, incorporating practices that build internal or intrinsic stability are key to staying in the driver’s seat. These can include Meditation, Heart-breathing, Exercise, Gratitude practices and regularly doing activities that you love with people that you love.

Even the simple but potent act of smiling is proven to increase oxytocin to the brain and therefore increases happiness, coherence and fulfilment levels, and it’s something we can do any time we like.

Perhaps there are some daily actions that you can include or increase to access more of the benefits of intrinsic stability?
