Are you confident that you can attract the perfect team members into your business?
Or do you feel like it’s a bit of a lottery sometimes?
In last week’s Thursday HotSeat, the Member in focus was looking for an awesome PA to enhance both his life and his business, someone that he could rely on to ease his workload. We delved into what it takes to surround yourself with the perfect team members to compliment your strengths and support your weaknesses, and the practical steps to making that happen.
It’s a pretty common belief among some entrepreneurs and business leaders that ‘it can be tough to find good staff’. However, with practical steps and a positive, expectant frame of mind, this is definitely not the case.
Knowing who you really want in those seats on the bus, and how best to speak their language so that they respond to your communication is key to getting the results you want.
The first step is to write down a list of the skills and attributes that your ideal person would have. This might sound simple, but many entrepreneurs and business leaders, when asked, will likely say they know what they want (and commonly, what they don’t want..) and may not have actually written down and clarified what they really do want.
Another key point to consider here, is that the person you ‘click’ with is not necessarily the person you need in your business. In fact, you will likely need someone entirely the opposite to you for your business to succeed. It’s important that they fit your culture, however they may not think like you.
For example, if you are strong at starting things but have a tendency to lose interest or momentum along the way, then you need the support of a strong finisher to help you to get things completed. And the opposite would be true too, as well as many other degrees in between.
Great.. so when you know who you want, how do you find that person?
Once you are clear on who you want, you can look at how you would craft an ad that speaks to them directly. They will likely not be looking for the same things that you find exciting in a job, so if you write an ad that you find appealing, you could be heading down the road of sifting through many resumes from people that you ‘click’ with.. whilst that illusive person that you actually need is still nowhere to be found.
Within the Club, we use profiling tools that help to identify a person’s Flow and what makes them tick. This helps with bridging communication styles and results in more understanding, harmony and efficiency, as each team member is working within their Flow.
Profiling potential team members at this level is a game-changer and has actually saved the odd marriage too, assisting partners to understand why each other do what they do.
You may have something similar that you currently use and if not, you can keep it simple, by writing a list of your strengths and weaknesses to clarify what skills and attributes you are looking for in your future team member. Then conjure that person up in your mind and imagine how best to communicate in a way that will be appealing to them – What attributes do they want in a job? What activities do they get excited about doing? What are they naturally good at?
Good luck with identifying, attracting and building your ideal team.
