Reverse mentoring

by Leigh / Friday, 14 July 2023 / Published in Business

Yesterday’s Special Guest Thursday HotSeat gave an Elder Member the opportunity to share the depth of their wisdom, experience and gifts, providing potent takeaways for us all.

Amongst many other pearls, when asked for a top tip to creating a successful business, he said:

“Getting out of your comfort zone and accepting feedback from others. Mentors who have been where you want to go and their joy now is in supporting you. Don’t be scared to reach out, and conversely, don’t be afraid to reach sideways, or even to a younger person to help with tech etc.

My biggest learnings over the next 18 months will likely come from people who are much younger than me “

This is sage advice for us all. Having the prudence to utilise ‘reverse mentoring’ in our businesses will become increasingly important with the fast–paced emergence and improvement of AI. This is an area where the traditional idea of mentors generally being older and/or with more life experience is turned on its head, and the true value of a more innate understanding of tech by a younger generation will be invaluable in leading the way.

If you don’t currently have any younger Team Members, perhaps consider hiring a VA (either in Australia or overseas) to benefit from their ability to more easily understand and adopt tech solutions.

And if you already do have younger Team Members, this may be an opportunity to consider if there is any assumption of seniority that is linked to age and experience, which might limit the appreciation and utilisation of the Genius of younger Team Members.

Together we are stronger.
